Habermus – healthy breakfast for the whole family.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It provides us with energy and essential nutrients necessary for the proper functioning of the body from the very morning. Saint Hildegard recommends eating a dish made of warm spelt as the first meal in the form of the so-called habermus.

What is habermus?

Habermus is St. Hildegard’s proposition for a nutritious and warming breakfast. These coarsely broken spelted groats with the addition of nuts, fruit, honey and spices recommended by a German nun will ensure good mood for the whole day. Habermus contains high-quality proteins, complex carbohydrates, unsaturated fats, vitamins A, vitamins B, D, E and trace elements: Fe, P, Mg, Ca. It also contains tryptophan, an amino acid that plays a huge role in the production of serotonin (the happiness hormone). After eating such a breakfast, we will feel cheerful, full of energy and ready for a new day. Habermus is mainly prepared from crushed spelt grains, but we can also use spelt flakes or semolina. Spelt semolina will be a perfect addition to children’s menu, because it is easily digestible and very well absorbed by the body. Introducing it to the diet can be a big step to improving a quality of life, because it is not only tasty, but it will provide our children’s bodies with vitamins and microelements that will strengthen their muscles, all organs and, above all, the immune system.Habermus can be enriched by adding fruits (apples, pears), seeds, nuts, oils, honey and spices recommended by St. Hildegard. I invite everyone to try this wonderful delicacy, which will give you energy for the whole day.  Here is the basic recipe, which you can modify according to your preferences:

Ingredients:

1 cup of broken spelt grains or spelt flakes
4 cups of water
3 apples
3 pinches of galangal
3 pinches of bertram
Almonds or other nuts
½ teaspoon of cinnamon
Dried fruits
Psyllium seeds

Przygotowanie:

Pour water over the spelt and bring it to a boil, stirring constantly. Add honey and continue cooking until the grains become soft, about 10 minutes. Then add grated apples and dried fruit and cook for about 3 minutes. The finished dish can be sprinkled with almonds and psyllium seeds (1 teaspoon per person) and spices.

Attention for diabetics!!!
